Pre-Decorating Tips to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

With Thanksgiving around the corner, the calendar is already crowded for busy New Jersey homeowners. Only a few short weeks remain to prepare for out-of-town guests and gala holiday parties. To ensure your home is safe, bright and convenient for visiting friends and family, organize your holiday preparations with a pre-decorating checklist.

Make Safety a Priority

  • Before you plug in the first strand of Christmas lights, be sure your extension cords and power strips are in safe condition. Check for wattage ratings and usage restrictions. Place cords near walls where they won’t be a tripping hazard, and never cover them with carpet or rugs.
  • Make sure indoor and outdoor walkways are well-lit and defined. Consider installing motion sensor lighting outdoors, and add nightlights to every hallway and bathroom.
  • No one wants to deal with a heating crisis or equipment breakdown when the weather is cold and the house is full of guests. Schedule seasonal HVAC maintenance with a licensed, experienced contractor in your area. Remember to check references, and avoid contractors who give you a pushy sales pitch.
  • If you have a fireplace, call your chimney sweep. This is also the time to change batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors. If these devices are more than a decade old, it’s time to replace them altogether.

Deep-Clean Light Fixtures for a Brighter Interior

Festive occasions call for bright and sparkling lighting. Dust lamps and light fixtures, including the bulbs. Make sure lights are turned off and bulbs are cool before touching them. Chrystal chandeliers can be cleaned in place using a ladder, soft cloth and spray bottle. For fixtures in vaulted ceilings, consider installing a light lift system that lets you lower the chandelier for easier access and decorating. Adding a dimmer switch for lights in your den or living room lets you tone down the brightness as guests settle in for soft music and cozy reflection by the fire.

Set Up Convenience Stations for Guests

When you’re busy with party preparations, you won’t want houseguests underfoot. Prepare in advance with a few furniture rearrangements that will improve the function of your rooms as visitors arrive.

  • Set up a charging station on a bookcase in a hallway or out-of-the way nook. Post instructions for WI-FI access, and have extra chargers on hand for guests who forget to bring one.
  • Turn a narrow table in the den into a coffee or adult beverage bar. For mixed drinks, arrange a tray with ice bucket, mixers and bottles.
  • Arrange a corner of the family room with a game table, mini-fridge or a drink bin from the patio. When the crowd arrives, stock this area with bottled water, fruit drinks, soda, holiday treats and fresh fruit to create a convenient snack bar away from the kitchen.

Schedule an Electrical Upgrade With Maglio Electric

As you prepare for houseguests and holiday gatherings, do you have enough outlets for lamps and small appliances? Plug strips and extension cords can become fire hazards when they’re overloaded. You still have time to expand or upgrade the electrical service of your NJ home before holiday decorating and activities are in full swing! Call 908-735-6218 to speak with a Maglio team member or schedule an electrical inspection or service online. We look forward to serving you, year-round!
