Preparing for Unpredictable NJ Weather

Preparing for Unpredictable NJ Weather

Back in February when Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, few Hunterdon County residents guessed that his prognostication would fall short of the mark. As of week seven, New Jersey has endured four snowy nor’easters, with the latest racing through the state on the first day of spring. These unanticipated storms have left many Maglio customers reeling, bringing dangerous traffic conditions, widespread power outages and record accumulations of wet, heavy snow typically reserved for the peak of winter.

When long-trusted authorities like Phil and the Old Farmer’s Almanac prove as inaccurate as NJ weatherman, residents need a plan for surviving Mother Nature’s fury. The transition from winter to spring often brings wild conditions that catch families off guard, but you can safely weather the storm with a few wise preparations. Here are some suggestions to help you survive the cold and bluster of the next spring nor’easter—whenever it arrives.

Keeping Your Family Safe & Warm as March Roars Like a Lion

  • Clear trees and branches that could come into contact with power lines, roofs, driveways and downspouts. Wind and heavy, wet snow break branches and down trees, and ice dams and blocked downspouts keep melting snow from draining off roofs. You can prevent a home disaster with preseason maintenance to trim overhanging branches and keep drainage clear.
  • Stock an emergency kit for your home and vehicles. If you’re stuck without power or stranded on the turnpike, you’ll have extra batteries, a flashlight, blankets, medications and food to keep you safe until help arrives. The NJ Office of Emergency Management has detailed suggestions for surviving a disaster. Check out their website for a list of supplies and preparations to get you through any emergency.
  • Consider installing a back-up generator. Today’s homes depend on electric power for comfort, security, entertainment and communication. A professionally installed back-up generator minimizes loss during an emergency and keeps your family safe and comfortable. If you have a portable generator, be diligent about safe installation and operation to prevent a build-up of deadly carbon monoxide.
