Veterans Day & Military Family Appreciation

Veterans Day & Military Family Appreciation

Give Thanks for Military Members & Their Families

Cooler weather and blazing autumn foliage have many Hunterdon County residents thinking about the holidays. Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away, but local families can remember and thank our country’s veterans and their families during the entire month of November!

Veterans Day, an observance marking the end of WWI and recognizing those who have served in times of war and peace, is celebrated November 11. In addition, each year a Presidential Proclamation establishes November as Military Family Appreciation Month. The proclamation acknowledges the daily sacrifices made by spouses, children and parents of those serving in our armed forces.

“Each warrior who fights for our Nation, along with their families, has earned our eternal gratitude, and I ask that all Americans thank and support them.  Together, we remain committed to fostering a national community of support for these brave heroes and their families.”

Excerpt from 2019 Presidential Proclamation

Showing Appreciation for Veterans & Their Families

During November, on Veterans Day and throughout the year, here are five simple ways you can show appreciation to service veterans and military families.

    1. Volunteer at a VA hospital like the one in Lyons, NJ. You can also visit local veterans in hospice care or furnish transportation to those making frequent trips for medical treatment.
    2. Offer childcare to a military spouse so they can use their free time for self-care, errands or holiday shopping. Offer to include a service member’s child in sports, skating, camping or outdoor activities.
    3. Surprise a veteran or military family with a meal. Pick up the tab for a family eating out, or contact a veteran’s organization like Veterans Families United to find a military family in need.
    4. Say “Thanks” in person, on social media or with a card or handwritten note. Recognizing the service of veterans and their families brightens their day and yours. Organizations like Operation Gratitude send gifts and letters of holiday thanks to troops, veterans, wounded heroes, caregivers and first responders around the world. Don’t forget to include children’s notes (and artwork) along with your thank-you notes!
    5. Give a monetary gift to military families struggling financially or facing duty-related injuries or health conditions. Donate to wounded warriors, give frequent flyer miles to military members requiring treatment at a faraway VA hospital, or provide holiday gift cards for families of deployed troops.

New Jersey Veterans Day Observances

The historic Hunterdon County Courthouse bell will toll 21 times on November 11, 2019, beginning at 11 a.m. This “Bells for Freedom” salute began last year to salute the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day (the end of World War One). The County Board of Chosen Freeholders has deemed the salute an annual Veterans Day event to honor retired, disabled and active-duty military.

Parades and other events will be held November 9 to 11 throughout the state to honor U.S. veterans. Check with your local veterans’ organization or click here for a schedule of NJ observances.
